[Unicon]

Whilst I do enjoy going to conventions in old scout huts and rickety church halls, this Saturday (24th Avril)
we will be scouring the grounds of the 'Unicon' at the University of Hertfordshire.

Much of the event seems the equivilent of comfort eating, pop and family friendly fun, but with the oppurtunity to meet
Dave Gibbons, Pat Mills, Kevin O'Neill AND get my face painted. How can I resist?

A full report to come soon, hopefully with pictures and some new exciting news.

[Competition Results]

Two weeks ago we held our first competition and whilst the winner was revealed in the comments, here is a more official announcement. The wonderful 'Olivia' was picked from the magic hat of randomness, and therefore is the winner of an exclusive original drawing (no copies, no prints, one of a kind). She picked 'Beryl the Peril' as her favourite comic book character and whilst part of me did groan inside for having to overlook people who chose 'Death' or 'Batman' she is undoubtedly a classic. Congratulations to you Olivia.

[Uk mini comics and web-thing]

In recent news, Undergrime showed one of its many faces at the Uk mini-comics and web thing this year. Whilst I had slight reservations about an event that mis-spelt the word 'volunteer' on its website, exaggerated the entry fee from the advertised price, and produced banners that, for the more artistically inclined, would cause seizure, I am happy to say it was a thoroughly enjoyable event. In general the content was rich and the people were charming. A few select favourites for me were the gentlemen of Dirty Rotten Comics who have tounges firmly wedged in everyones cheeks, the ever acerbic Martin Angry Owl and for sheer originality: My Cardboard Life. Hopefully we will be able to get some exclusive content from them as well as from others at the fair (that is if they managed to get out of Bow alive), in the mean time listen to fang island.

[Pages 1 & 2]

[Short Sequential]
Artist: Lauren Barnett
Title: Just one last thing

"The work I post on my daily blog is very different from what you see here, which is also very different from what I publish in my mini comics. I enjoy having these different facets to myself and my work and also keeping them somewhat separate. My daily blog is more of a surface exposure, in that I look at it as more of a sketchbook of tidbits or experiences transformed into single-cell humor gags. Sometimes they are more thought-out and visually detailed, but usually they remain on this more basic level. My minis are different in that I actually use my likeness as a character and the stories are longer and involve more introspection. This piece is kind of on the line between the two, it is more graphic in style, and it is a collection of one-liners, however the composition is really different from my usual daily work. This one is a depiction of a bad day, when you just want to leave work or a situation and then there is one stupid little thing that prohibits you from doing so. If you notice too, you can start reading the bubbles and they kind of become a sort of tornado where you start reading ones over that you have already read. It's like that endless cycle that you can't get out of, even though the questions are lighthearted and not intentionally malevolent, they are ultimately a frustration." - Lauren Barnett
